Penitentiary of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (United States)
Built in 1829, the Eastern State Penitentiary – with its castle look – represented a new era in building prisons! Inside, prisoners lived alone, exercised alone and ate alone. When an inmate left his cell, his head was covered with a hood so that he could neither see nor be seen. From 1913, the overcrowded prison had to abandon its isolation system, until its closure in 1971. However, the punishments have not become less severe.
